On Patriotism: What does Moses have to do with July 4th?

Starting with a confession, I seldom have an original thought or first-hand God spoke this to me revelation. Instead, my worldview is shaped by others and moments of insight/discernment that are God's way of speaking to me. This morning, I read an essay (included below) that compelled me to reflect on the relationship between the American Government and Moses. Our nation's covenantal relationship with the Law-Giver is at stake. What is our national identity? Where is our foundation? Is it solid or shifting? Are we a nation of laws or mob rule?

A Fourth of July Meditation

Today, July 4th, 2022, we celebrate Independence Day, and for perhaps the first time I can remember, our nation's loudest voices are anti-patriotic and ashamed of our nation's history. We are heavily divided, suspicious, dissatisfied, and fearful of what tomorrow will look like. The latest poll from last week:

Eighteen percent (18%) of Likely U.S. Voters think the country is heading in the right direction, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey for the week ending June 30, 2022.

Dirty Laundry in Europe

We have a president who jokes that he would rather stay in Europe than return for our nation's July 4th Celebration. He betrayed his globalist preferences as he criticized our democracy and constitution:

President Joe Biden made a pointed effort Thursday to criticize two branches of the American government during his trip to Europe. The president first voiced his frustration with the Supreme Court during his press conference in Spain, scolding them for their "outrageous behavior" by overturning Roe v. Wade and ruling supporting the Second Amendment. He described the Supreme Court as "destabilizing" to the global order.

"We've been a leader in the world in terms of personal rights and privacy rights, and it is a mistake in my view for the Supreme Court to do what it did," he said.

Justices to the Supreme Court were nominated by the duly elected president and confirmed by the United States Senate...

During his press conference, the president also implicitly criticized the Senate for not codifying the right to abortion into federal law, urging them to break the filibuster rules protecting the minority party's ability to block legislation.

The Slow Drift Manifests Itself Openly

All that Biden (or his handlers) has done to bring shame to our nation, our history, and our legal system is a slow, deliberate shift away from the Law Giver, the Covenant Maker, our Creator, and our Deliverer. There has been a fringe group all along that was moving in this direction, but they became most pronounced in the Democratic party in 2012:

The Democrat Party's divorce of God should come as no surprise. At the 2012 Democrat National Convention, most delegates wanted to remove a reference to God from the party platform. When the leaders decided to leave it, the audience loudly booed. They did not want even a superficial reference to God...

Contrast their attitude to that of Benjamin Franklin, considered one of America's most nonreligious founders. Franklin reacted swiftly and vehemently when Thomas Paine sent him a manuscript in which he challenged the idea of a prayer-answering God and other aspects of orthodox Christian doctrine.

Franklin refused to print the book and, in strong language urged Paine not even to allow anyone else see it.

He wrote,"I would advise you, therefore ... to burn this piece before it is seen by any other person; whereby you will save yourself a great deal of mortification by the enemies it may raise against you, and perhaps a good deal of regret and repentance. If men are so wicked with religion [Christianity], what would they be if without it" (Hyatt, 1726: The Year That Defined America, 138).

Franklin may have questioned certain aspects of Christian doctrine during his life, but he was convinced that only Christianity provided the moral teachings for a stable and successful society. He dreaded the thought of what would happen if that influence were removed.

I remember several other events that caused my heart to sink at the beginning of Barak Obama's presidency:
  • For two decades, Obamas had been under Reverend Jeremiah Wright's hateful anti-American, anti-Semitic liberation theology. Before I knew who Barak Obama was, I was familiar with the Black Liberation Theology movement and Rev. Wright. https://moguldom.com/213572/15-things-to-know-about-obamas-pastor-of-20-years-rev-jeremiah-wright/
  • 2009: President Barack Obama stated at a press conference in Turkey last week that we Americans "do not consider ourselves a Christian nation, or a Muslim nation, but rather, a nation of citizens who are, uh, bound by a set of values." https://thenewamerican.com/obama-america-not-a-christian-nation/ - but where did those values come from? What is the source of their inspiration? Or are you projecting your values onto our nation?
  • 2015 Michelle Obama: "For the first time in my adult lifetime, I'm really proud of my country …" I am sure she is very proud of her husband's accomplishments and acceptance by Americans, but it sounds like Rev. Wright's "God Damn America" sermon had helped frame her view of her country, is this really the only time she has been proud of America?
  • 2015: When President Obama spoke at Georgetown University, a Catholic institution, he demanded that the Christian symbol behind his podium be removed.

So what is America's brand/identity now? Do we have reason to celebrate our Independence? Is it too late for patriotism?
